Late to-night a fire broke out in Caldwell's block of buildings in the centre of the business portion of Stafford-street The fire started in Kelly's tailor's shop which was completely burnt out. Caldwell's ironmongery and stock, ind other shops in the block were slightly damaged by smoke and water.

Court statistics for the quarter show a decrease in the number o£ persons charged and eonvicted of offences connected with the supply and receipt of liquor. Sixteen persons were convicted of drunkenness, and 5 of offences- directly traceable to drink, and 10 prohibition orders issued as against 32 and 26 and 8 respectively in 1906. In reference to a telegram from Auckland re probable sending of a Dominion team of bowlers to Australia, it should be stated that it has been already privately arranged to send a team of about 30 leading p'ayers, representing Wellington, Cbristchurch, Wairaato, Oamaru, Dunedin, Gore and Invercargill, to Victoria and New South Wales next April.
