WANGANUI EDUCATION BOARD.

The usual monthly meeting of the

above Board was held last evening. There were present: Messrs F. Piraui (chairman), E. Dixon, J. Smith, F. M. Spurdlo, A. Fraser, G. H. Bennett, D. H. Guthrie, W. O. Cargill. Leave of absence was granted to Mr P. Purnell. The bank account showed a debit balance of £2076 ICs 4d. Mr Cargill reported favourably on establishing a school at Mangawhero. A deputation in support of same was hoard. It was decided to apply to Government for a grant. Appointments.—Mr F. A. Bates, Hawera; Miss Gudgeon, temporarily, Oroua Bridge; Miss F. A. Howie, Parawanui; Miss H. A. Young, St. John’s ; Miss P. C. Thompson, Halcombo ; Mr E. O. Ewart, Mere Merc; Mr L. Teguer, applying for appointment elsewhere. —Received. Resignations.—Mr J. McLeod (Hawera) and Mr M. Harris (St. John’s.)

Sick Leave.—Tho following wore granted sick leave : E. T. Casey six weeks, 11. J. Pitts two weeks, G, Koudell extra throe months, M. O, Harris one week, O. K. Ooombcr one week, G. Robertson 15 days, L. Clinton 13 days, H. L. Spratt 10 days. E. A. Howie two weeks, E. A. Howie one extra month, M. Mcl-

.ish seven days, Rockell five weeks.

General Leave.—Tho following wore granted general leave : E. Mossman one week, S. Stagpoolo exam., C. A. Strack military school, N. GJ Armstrong two days, J. Aitken three days.

Tho Inspector’s report on leaflets and on Mars Hill residence, and also the usual monthly reports were received. Dominion Day.—Tho chairman thought that with all tho sickness about enough schools had been closed —never more for 14 years. A motion to this effect was carried. Accounts to tho value of £3166 10s

4d wore passed for payment.' Oroua Bridge.—£ for £ up to £8 to be granted for draining and metalling.

Committee of Advice.—-Mr G. Carsou was elected without opposition. _ Maintenance Grant. —The Education Department advised that £950 had been paid. Moawhaugo.— Application to be made for a schoolhouso for 20. Waiouru.—Resolved to send Mr Togner’s name to the committee for position as teacher. Rata.—Mr Purnell to report on the land taken by the Railway Department.

Rongotoa.—Tho question of csta Wishing a District High School was held over till next meeting. Huntcrvillo. —& for £ for new fence

offered. Lytton Street.—£s offered. Halcombo.— £ for £ allowed for fence.

Raurimu. to bo sup plied.

% Parewaum.—£l7 10s granted for shelter shed.

Bulls.—Application to bo made to Government to establish a District High School. . Bible in Schools. —Messrs Bruce and Johns waited on the Board and stated tho conditions under which Bible reading was to bo ccuducted. —Tho chairman said that tho Board had no power with regard to Bible reading. Ho had obtained tho opinion of Mr Fitzhorbertj who stated that the legal school time is five hours a day, which must not be encroached upon.—After some further discussion the deputation withdrew.
