Lord George Hamilton, in a letter to the Times, says that colonial preference, however well intentipned, will he really unable to popularise and strengthen the consolidation of the Empire while its operations are regulated by a spirit of unbending protection. ~
There is, however, not a particle of evidence to show that the tariff is prompted by vindictiveness or that the duties are higher than the Commonwealth Government considers necessary adequately to protect Australian products and to secure revenue.
