N.S.W. ELECTIONS.

sm Little Excitoiperji

Heavy Women’s Vote

Press A ssociaiion—Copyright. Sydney, September 10.

The weather continues favourable and election day was fine and bright. In. tho metropolitan areas the afternoon was declared a public holiday. Tho polling passed off quietly with little sign of excitement. All parties worked hard and liberally employed vehicles of all descriptions. Outside the direqji party issues _at stake the antagonism of a large section of voters to tho new Federal Tariff acted indirectly and the Local Option poll acted directly in stirring interest in the struggle. 'Both these cpiestions appealed especially to women, who availed themselves more largely than over previously of the ballot box.

Tho liquor and no-licouso interests vied v/jth each other in their activity in securing supporters.

Labour ami Independent Successes.

Sydney, September 10, Returns aro coming in slowly, and few of the city or.suburban figures are complete. As predicted, tho returns have produced some surprises. Country and metropolitan areas returned 18 Ministerialists, 10 Labour, 6 Independent, or including country electorates where the returns fairly well indicated which candidates will win the latest figures are" Ministerial 22, Labor 16, Independent 6. It is improbable that the Local Option poll will be available for a day or two, but ‘ No-License advocates claim that a majority of electorates will be found to have voted for reduction and a few forno-lioense. The poll on the liquor question is admittedly very heavy. “September 11. Mr Carruthers was returned by a majority of 8700. Mr Wade, who was responsible for the liquor and gaming laws, had a majority of 8800. All the members of Government were returned by substantial major!- j ties. The Premier expresses himself satis- ' fled with, the result of the election , and reckons that ho gained seven \ seats.
