Grain and Seed
Messrs Ivave and Carter, Ltd., Christchurch' report as follows : Wheat: Milling Tuscan 4s 5d to 4s fid, Pearl 4s 7d to 4s Bd, Hunters 4s 5d to 4s Od, fowl wheat 4s 3d to 4s 5d f.o.b. Lyttelton, sacks extra. Fowl wheat: Second quality milling still being largely used for fowl food. Milling wheat: The market is dull owing to the uncertainty caused by the proposed legislation re removal of duty on flour, flats: A Garton 8s 2d to 8s 3d, B Gartou 8s Id to 3s l%d, Sparrowbills 8s Id to 3s 2d, Danish 8s to 3s Id, Duns 3s 2d to 3s 4d f.o.b. Lyttelton, sacks included, market easier, recent rams having improved the feed prospects all round. Potatoes: Table sorts £3 5s to £3 10s. Derwonts in good demand. Seed lots £3 10s to £5 f.o.b. sacks included. Wool, Skin and Hide Sale.
Messrs A. H. Atkinson and Co., Ltd., report:—At our monthly sale on Thursday, sth instant, we offered an average catalogue of wool, skins, hides, tallow, etc. There was a good attendance of buyers and competition was keen. The wool offered was mostly crutchiugs and made up to 6d for good lines. Skins were a shade weaker than last sale. Quotations : Wool: Rough fleece fi3-7(1, dead Bd, crutchiugs medium sd, fair quality fid, inferior SjJd. Skins; Full wools B>fd, half to three-quarter wools Bd, shorts 7d, lambs 7}i<d, lambs broken fii-hl, dead fid to ?37d, dead broken o’iid, pelts inferior 2d to butchers’ half dry half to threoquarter wools 5s to 11s 7d. Hides: Medium ox 4%d to 4%d, medium cow 4>|d to 4%d, damaged cow 2j-7d to 3J£tl, hulls cut and slippy l%d to 2%d, liorse hides fis to 10s each, calf sound cut and damaged 2d to od, dry 2hhl, yearlings sound cut and slippy Ihjd to 23jjd. Stock Report. The Now Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency, Ltd., report: At Palmerston on Thursday a fair entry of cattle came forward. Buyers were present and a good sale resulted, all lines being at auction. Steers of all descriptions sold well, and there was a decided improvement in store cows. Mixed woaners ITs fid, store cows 31s to 40s, heifers in calf £3 2s fid, springing heifers £3 7s fid, good yearling steers £2 17s, 2 year steers £3 7s fid, 3 year steers ?£4 Bs. Feildiug, report for week ending September 7th as under; —At Apiti on Tuesday the entry of both sheep and cattle was a small one, but met 'with a good sale. Sheep; Hoggets 13s 8d to 14s Id. Cattle : Cows in milk ,£3 2s Gd to £4, springing cows £3 19s fid to £3 7s fid, springing heifers £3 12s fid to £3 7s, 3 j 7 oar steers £4 3s to £5 ss, fat heifers £4, store cows 80s to 50s. At Feildiug on Friday a small yarding of sheep mot with a good sale. Wo had a good entry of cattle, and buyers being present all lines, with the exception of one or two small lots, were sold at auction at good Values. Young cattle,, steers, and store cows were in good demand, but dairy stock are still dhll of sale. Sheep : Cull hoggets 12s 9d. Cattle : Shorthorn yearling steers £3 11s, 2 year Shorthorn steers £3 19», 2,37 year Polled Angus steers £4 3s fid, yearling heifers 255, backward 2 year heifers 38s to 80s, 3 year Polled Angus heifers £3 _7s, springing heifers £3 10s, cows in calf £3 to £3 10s, forward cows £2 os, light fat cows £4 4s.
Messrs Gorton and Son report t Owing to' pressure of Business we were unable to mate our usual wocklv report last week. On Monday we held a large sale at Bulls. Bidding was brisk, particularly for cattle, and we made a total clearance for all but one pen of sheep. We quote: Mixed hoggets 14s 3d to 16s id, ewes and lambs 22s id, old store ewes 11s, wether hoggets 13s Id, small 2 tooth wethers 10s. Cows and calves £2 13s to £4 17s (id, fat cows £4 13s (id, heifers iu calf £2 16s, store cows £2 to £3 12s (id, emptv heifers Sos to 325. At Huntervillo on Tuesday wo had a small yardiug of sheep and cattle. Mixed hoggets 13s Sd, owe hoggets 16s Id, empty cows £3 3s, [[dairy cows £5 5s to £5 10s. Mr Alex. McKenzie’s horse sale at Bedding on Wednesday was well attended, and resulted in a splendid sale. Unbroken draughts made £.20 to £26 10s, lighter sorts £ll to £l7, aged 85s to £i On account of other vendors, shatters and leaders made from £4O to £42 15s, spring carters £36. Feilding sale ; 2 year steers £3 9s, forward bullocks £6, 18 months steers £3 Gd to £3, light fat cows £4 to £4 7s 6d, springing cows £3 7s Gd to £5, empty heifers 30s to 345, forward cows £2 10s. Ewes and lambs 20s, mixed hoggets 13s lOd to 16s 3d, wether hoggets 15s, store ewes 10s Gd, prime fat sheep (pets) 27s 4d. Hockeu Bros. ’ horse sale on Saturday was fairly well attended. Spring carters made from £24 to £34, 3 and 4 vear old medium to heavy loaders £33 to £53, 3 to 6 years medium to extra heavy shatters £34 to £6O. This week we held a clearing sale at Mr P. Brown’s, near Bulls, and usual weekly sales at Pah merston and Foilding. Mr Brown’s sale was largely attended and bidding was keen throughout. Ccws made from £4 to £8 7s Gd, for early calvers and cows iu milk down to £3 for empty cows, sundries and harness also sold well. At Palmerston we had a fair yardiug of both sheep and cattle and ‘quote : Ewe hoggets _ 17s to 18s Gd, 3 year steers £5 7s, springing heifers £3 10s to £2 13s Gd, mixed yearlings 31s Gd, 18 months steers £3 11s, empty heifers 355. A.t Feildiug there was a small yarding of sheep and fair entries iu cattle. Bidding was brisk, and all sold at folowing prices : —First class ewe hoggets 18s Gd to 19s fid, fair owe hoggets 17s sd, mixed hoggets 10s lOd to 12s Id, empty forward cows £2 18s Gd to £3, mixed yearilngs 25s to 30s fid, good mixed Hereford weanors £2 13s, springing cows £4 2s fid to £3, springing heifers £3 70s, small weanors 17a fid.
