ARBITRATION ACT AMEND--MENT.

Per Press Association,

Napier, September 6.

A largely attended meeting of the Hawke’s Bay branch of the Employers’ Association was held to-day when the following resolutions were adopted ; —(1) That this Association approves of the method of appointing industrial councils provided satisfactory arrangements can be made by the appointment of suitable and permanent presidents of unquestionable ability, and that two presidents should be appointed for each island. (2) That the proposed method of collecting workmen’s fines by the employers be strongly objected to by_ this Association. (3/ That this Association approves of the proposal that contributions to unions and associations by other than members should be made compulsory. {■!) That applications for permits to work for less than the minimum wage should be made to the Inspector of Award?. (5) That this Association disapproves of the inclusion of gasworks and electrical energy works under the Factories Act. {(1) That this Association is of opinion that the halfholiday now appointed for shops and factories should be made applicable to all places except the four chief centres— Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin.

Trades Onion Opposition: Napier, September 6. A meeting of delegates from the various Trades Unions in Napier was held this evening to discuss the proposed amendments to the Industrial Arbitration and Conciliation Act. The meeting were unanimously opposed to the establishment of an Industrial Council and also to many other of the proposed alterations. A copy of the various resolutions will be forwarded to the Minister in charge of the Bill.
