A TUNNEL TRAGEDY.
(Per Press Association."' Auckland, September 7. Newmarket railway tunnel was the scene of a tragic occurrence this morning when a young man lost his life. The driver -of the 8.30 a.m. train to Auckland reported having run over something and a train which followed stopped at the tunnel, the driver and a porter proceeding in from Newmarket end. About ten yards in they found the body of a man just clear of the x - ails, face downwards, quite dead. The train appeared to have run over his hand, which, with the wrist, was smashed completely to piilp. It is not known how the man met his death but it is surmised that ho attempted to cross from one carriage to another and lost his footing. There was no one else on the platform at the time. In his pockets were found letters addressed to J. W. May, care of National Bank, Auckland. The man was tall, clean shaved, well made, witli fair hair, and about 28 years of age. Later. “The body lias been identified as that of J. W. May, single, aged 23, a teller in the National Bank, residing at Remuera.
