THE UNWRITTEN LAW.
An extraordinary murder trial is stirring the State of Maryland to its depths. The widow and sou of a farmer named Bowie, are charged witli murdering a man named Herbert Posie, and they have entered the now customary plea in the south of the “unwritten law.” Both the prisoners gave evidence on their own behalf. The mother testified that she was entirely to blame, but she believed she could appeal with certainty to Southern chivalry, for she had simply defended the honour of her family. Tho dead man, she declared, betrayed her daughter Piscilia, and she simply took steps to punish the betrayer. The evidence of the son showed that, having discovered the wrong done bv Posie, he and his mother both fired at the seducer, inflicting fatal injuries. A child had. once been born to the girl, and it was on discovering her condition that Posie absconded. Public opinion is strongly in favour of the prisoners.
