SANSON NOTES.

From Our Own Ooffespondent. Onr school is now open again after being closed for a period of throe weeks, owing to the prevalence of measles and whooping cough. Mr Browns visited the school on Monday jlnst find commenced ills work as instructor in “School Dairying.” Tins work is to take the place of science and nature study, and, I think, most people will agree that it is of far greater importance, seeing that a thorough knowledge of dairying is necessary in order to be successful in what is ono of the great industries of the colony.

According to the annual report there is a decrease of .no loss than 7,434 pigs compared with, last year. I hear that dairymen in this.district have already started killing their calves, and those who have not bred pigs of their own, and very few of them do, might take the above into consideration. Pigs are bound to be dear and perhaps they would find it more profitable to save the calves which are sure to bring a good price in the autumn..

In the annual report of the Department of Agriculture wo read that good progress is being.made in the eradication of noxious weeds. Let ns hope that this is correct. Californian and pennyroyal have gained a fairly strong footing in Ma-uawatu, especially the latter, and we never hear of any steps being taken to compel owners to eradicate them, excepting near the larger centres. It would hot bo any hard-

ship to compel farmers to clear out those weeds at present, but the

longer it is put off the more expensive it will become and in time the prico of .laud will bo depreciated. benuyroyal is easily killed by applying a little salt. Californian thistle should he dug out as deeply as possible, the plant will be very weak the next time it makes its appearance and by going over the plot say every fortnight, with a hoe, they are soon eradicated.
