SUBMARINE DISTURBANCE.
Press Association Auckland, August Sl.gO Captain Ross, of tho schooner Ysabel, who arrived n.t Auckland from Tonga to-day, reports that when in that locality a snbmarie disturbance occurred -where it was previously reported ou tho chart, showing 1000 fathoms, and a terrific explosion was hoard. Several of the crow declared the vessel had struck something. The mate wont aloft and reported shoal water ahead and ou both bows. Tho Ysahel was then running before a north-east gale, land the position was serious. Another shook shook tho vessel from stem to stern, and tiio pumps wore used, but drew no water, and tho shoals reported proved only cloudy waiter.” The smell of sulphur was very pronounced. Tho third and last shock was experienced at 6 p.m. as darkness was sotting in. The locality was latitude 31, 18 south longitude, 175.47 west. It was a very dark and rainy night, and nothing could bo seen as to the nature of the disturbance.
