Immense Enthusiasm

Nine hundred delegates representing 25 nationalities attended the International Socialist Conference at Stuttgart. The United States sent 21, Germany 300, Britain 130, including 59 representatives of the Social Democratic Federation, 38 of the Independent Labour Party, 16 of the Fabian Society, six of Trade Unions, two of the Labour Party. South African and Australia wore also represented.

Herr Bebel, loader of the German Socialists, on rising to address the inaugural meeting in the Liederhallo which was draped with red was received with frantic enthusiasm and cheered for fully two minutes.

Ho reviewed the progress of tho movement; claiming that there was much progress’ in France, Finland, Austria, Holland and Switzerland. He complimented tho English proletariat on its brilliant victory, and said that though a clever bourgeois Government had taken Mr Burns into the Cabinet it had not succeeded in changing tho fighting tactics of tho workmen’s party. Continuing, he said that though tho number df Socialist scats in tho -Beiohstag had been reduced the party had (rained a quarter of a million more votes at last election, so Royalty had failed to ride down social democracy. He rejoiced at tho brilliant acquittal of William Haywood from the scandalous prosecution by tho capitalist classes in connection with the murder of Stouenborg, former Governor of Idaho, and hoped that the Socialist Conference would do better than that at The Hague, which was destined to bring forth tho most ridiculous stillborn mouse.

Harr Binger was elected president at the first plenary sitting on Tuesday. A hundred thousand persons attended a mass meeting in tho fields at Cannstalt, a suburb of Stuttgart. The proceedings wore quite orderly, though the speeches of Herren Bebel and Binger, James and Ferri inspired immense enthusiasm.
