Although tlio weather was cold and cheerless for the 'opening day of tho Grand National meeting tho attendance was excellent, tho going was iu capital order, and the racing was full of interest. The Steeplechase in particular was one of the. prettiest seen at luccartou. Eelair's time established a record for tho race, the previous best being Slow Tom's Twin, it 3-ssecs. There wcro a few spills during- the day but riders and horses escaped serious injury. Totalisator receipts amounted to .£21,555, an increase of on last year.
