Marlborough Land Board has tacitlv acknowledged the justice of settlers' claims to the right to reside off small sections near Ward township, at Flaxbourno, pending completion of the railway promised when the sections wero taken up. A fireman on the Athenic, Patrick Cunningham, was charged at Wel-lingtou'Ma-gistrate's Court with disobedience of an order to muster for boat drill on tho voyage out. Defendant contended that boat drill was outside tho work lie had contracted to perform. Mr Riddoll, S.M., said tiie order was a legitimate ono, and a crow must become proficient in boat drill. Defendant was fined 2Cs.
The Rata Dairy Factory opened this week, and a successful season is looked forward to. Last year tho output showed an increase of io}4 tons of butter, which was accepted as a highly satisfactory result at the meeting of shareholders at Huntorvillo yesterday. The social evening in connection with St. Stephen's Church, which is to lis held in tho schoolroom on Wednesdav 21st August, promises to bo a great success. The programme, which consists of glees and other musical items, includes an action song entitled "Butterfly Wings,'' by twelve little girls.
