ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.

(Per Press Association.) Auckland, August 12. •The policeman on duty at Pousonbv station was informed at 10.15 last night by a man named Marshall that it young couple had fallen from a rock overhanging tho water at Shelly . Beach. He stated while near the beach bout 10 o'clock lie heard a splash, followed by a girl's screams, and a cry "Leo, don't. Leo, take mo with you." He said he then he ml a second splash, and looking iu the direction of the sound he saw only ripples on the water, as if it had been recently disturbed. Instead of going to tho spot ho ran to the police*- station to give the alarm. Two constables, accompanied by Mr J. H. Upton, were soon on the scene, but after rowing about for two hours they found no signs of tho tragedy. The police resumed the search this morning. On Saturday night the Inspector of Police was'notified from Taupiri that on.-Friday ovoning William I-lagau reported that a settler of Hukauui named Patrick MeSwconey was missing. Hagau told the constable he' and McSwocncfy left Maugawara in a trap for Huntly, but two miles from Taupiri .the vehicle capsized. Hagan recovered; consciousness about two hours after- , wards and found himself quite; alone. Ho mado a search and located I tho trap and horse lin a gully, but could find no trace of his Companion. Further search was instituted in conjunction with the police, but without result. Napiek, August 12. An inquest was held on Saturday concerning the death of Sarah Agnes Kirk, aged 17. who died during the progress of an operation. Medical evidence showed that deceased was suffering from a cyst, which displaced the heart and while an operation was rendered imperative tho condition of tho heart made it difficult. When the patiout showed signs of collapse every effort, was mado to resuscitate her- but failed. Tho jury were satisfied that all proper care, had been taken.
