FOOTBALL.
The Professional Team. Per Press Association. Ancn.AND, Auaust 12. Mr A. K. Devore, President of Auckland Rugby Union, speaking at a dinner at which tho Hawko's Bay team were entertained, expressed regret at tho appearance of professionalism in football in this colony. Its evil effects svero so well known he thought it had small chance of retaining a place among players generally or with those having control of the game in Now Zealand. , Mr McCarthy, manager of Hawko's Bay team, said ids Union was utterly opposed to professionalism. In Napier the opinion was held that but for the support given to the movement by prominent Aucklandcrs it would never have been possible to send a professional team from this colony. Mr'M. E. Sliehau, chairman of Auckland Rugby Union, said these remarks were unfortunately true, but the energy of 'lie New Zealand Rugby Uuiou in stamping out professionalism would receive every support fronrtho Auckland Union. Passengers by the Victoria for Sydney this evening include the following Auckland footballers, who are to join the New Zealand professional team :—W. Mackrcll, W. Trovarthcu, H. Rowe, W. Tyler, J. Hall, L. Todd, G. W. Smith, R. and W. Wyuvard. Later. A. Dunning, Auckland hooker, replaces Hall in the professional team.
