After the bombardment began tho Bashaw bogged M. fteuviile, the Consul, to ask tho French commander to stop it promising to guarantee the restoration of safety. Tho Consul intimated that his reply would bo reserved until another party of sailors had lauded. This done the Consul demanded tho disarming of all soldiers and tho bringing of them in chains to thoconsu’ato. Accordingly the soldiers who urea on the sailors wore led in chains.
Tho Consul warned the Bashaw that those would bo shot if the natives continued to threaten the vicinity. Tlio bombardment was then suspended but resumed at the Bashaw’s request owing to the menacing attitude of the tribesmen in the outskirts. Melinite shells killed and wounded hundreds. Paris, August 8. Lo Temps says the German Government recognised the necessity of tlio French action. LG i France has informed tlio Powers that she intends to maintain and safeguard tho Sultan’s authority and the Empire’s integrity. Berlin, August 8. Some local journals ascribe the bombardment of Casablanca to tho French naval, comnnmdcr’s momentary impulse, and declare that well oii;"i.uisod police would have accomplished all the landing parties accomplished. Morocco, August 8. It is estimated that 400 wore killed at Casablanca.
