An Auckland telegram states that Alfred Michelly, who has boen arrested for embezzlement, had boen making arrangements for an early departure from Auckland, and had decided to leave for Australia by next Monday’s boat. He had disposed of nearly all his assets in various ways, including the more valuable part of his household furniture, On Wednesday bailiffs visited his house with distress warrants for arrears of rent and other debts, but found that as to furniture very little of value remained in the house. The enquiry at Rotorua into the fire that destroyed the Presbyterian Church manse on July 13th lasted all day and till 11 o’clock at night. The jury found that there were many very suspicious circumstances about the Are, but there was no direct evidence to show how it originated, aud a rider was added calling the attention of the tourist department to the evidence of the captain of the fire brigade that had the full pressure of water been avail ■ able at the start the fire could have been suppressed, aud requesting the department to take steps to prevent a similar failure in the future. The Star's Birkenhead correspondent writes that the e.s. Aparinia, a vessel of 6000 tons, now discharging sugar, is the largest vessel that has yet been berthed at the Sugar Co.’s wharf at Chelsea. She haa also brought the largest cargo of raw sugar (6300 tons) that has been received so far by tho Company at this port. Walker, chairman of the gas committee, is coming to Wellington with a view of inducing Government to remit the duty. . All Dunedin importers signed a petition, which was forwarded to members of the House yesterday, protesting against the proposed duty on brushware used in the painting trade.
The first monthly meeting of Marton Friendly Societies Council was held last evening. Mr T. Lound (Foresters) was elected president, Mr Stafford (Druids) vicepresident, aud Miss Gibbous (Court Alexandra) secretary and treasurer. At Bulls Court this morning, before Mr Stanford, S.M., the charge against Frank Rhodes, of permitting quarrelsome conduct on the premises was dismissed, the Magistrate remarking that it was a pity the in* formation had been laid against the licensee. He said there was no evidence to show that a quarrel had taken place.
Mr JFlatman’s Agricultural Labourers’ Bill was approved by the Premier. Of course it provides,for the appointment of inspectors, and farmers who employ assistants will therefore have to pay fees, and be under the surveillance of the agricultural police. Arrivals in New Zealand during May last numbered 1988 and the departures 3139. The figures for corresponding month last year were 3893. and 2521 respectively. The man Geo. Munro, who was arrested on Sunday on a charge of burning 15 straw and oaten sheaf stacks at Riversdale, has been committed to Seacilff Asylum for medical treatment, medical examination proving him insane. Ap etitiou protesting against Government’s proposal to convert Larnarch Camp into a criminal lunatic asylum is being largely signed. The principal ground of protest is the lack of protection in the event of a criminal lunatic escaping from custody. „ _ A deputation of members of ParLament asked the Premier yesterday to do something for James Meikle, who was dismissed after the Bankside railway colilsion. Sir J. G. Ward promised favourable consideration, also stating that all important inquiries in future .will be carriec out in public and by an independent tribunal.
A largely attended meeting of accountants at Auckland suggested amendments to the Accountants Bill that the minimum age for registration bo 25 years; that all members of any accountants’ association in this colonr and any portion of the British Empire be entitled to register; that half the council of each district be practical accountants ; and that the council should consist of four members from each centre and four from the remainder of the colony. At the Oamarn Magistrate’s Court Major Keddell delivered judgment in the case Cullen v. Tait, master of a Timaru dredge, for sailing without the full complement of men. Major Keddell previously heard and dismissed the case, but on appeal to the Supreme Court Judge Williams reversed Iris decision and sent it back for the imposition of a penalty. In giving judgment the Magistrate said it was owing to the interference of a Timaru Harbour Board employee that the dredge sailed without the full complement. Regarding the fact that the cook held a mate’s certificate that did not alter the case, in that? he might have been discharged for misconduct, but being a seafaring man bo was forced to follow the sea for a livelihood though iu a humble capacity. Defendant was fined £lO and costs, £3 10s.
At the meeting of Wellington Land Board on Thursday the members present were:—Messrs J. Stranchou (chairman), A. Reese, J. Dawson J. M. A’Court, and O. J. Canton. On the application of Mr J. Graham, solicitor, the transfer of section 44, block 11., Kairanga, from Mr M. P. Welsh to Mrs S. J. Edwards, was approved, in the special circumstances, provided that the conditions of the lease are fully complied with, and that Mr Graham personally guarantees that the trausfes of this and certain other sections are presented in due order and none withheld. The same course was followed with regard to Mr Graham’s application for the transfer of section 13, block XIV., Orouaa, from Mrs S. J. Edwards to Mr A. G. Lange. After explanations from Mr T. Currie, the Board rescinded resolutions of last meeting and approved the transfers of section 14, block XII,, Apiti, the latter to Mrs J, Currie, Miss If.
