OTIRA TUNNEL CONTRACT.
Costly West Coast Work. Per Press Association. W ELLINGTON, Auglist2. The Post states that the contract for construction of the Otira tunnel, between Government and McLean Bros., has been finally signed. The Amount is £599,794. If the work is Ip'iie finished in five years the tunnel must bo worked from both ends. It is expected that 2miles will bo bored from Bealey and about three miles from Otira. Mr Murdock McLean will leave for Britain and the Continent in September to purchase complete boring plant which will probably cost about £50,000.
