AUSTRALIA’S WEAK SPOT.
Press Association. —Association. Sydney, August 1. At the annual meeting of the Chamber of Commerce Mr. Merivale, the president, suggested that the Northern Territory might be handed over to Britain to be populated by natives of India. Without population, or even police outposts connected by telegraph, the • Territory offered irresistible temptation to any foreign nation which might be tempted to take advantage of England’s absence or distraction. The danger of a black population will be only real if they were not under proper control. Australia would secure the advantage of having a largo tract peopled and governed not only by friends but by her own kin.
