MARTON POULTRY SHOW.

Visitors Entertained Last evening the Society entertained the visiting exhibitors, judges and others in the social room at the drill hall. Mr John McEldownoy, vice-president, presided, and a good number sat down to supper. The usual loyal tcast was duly honoured. The Chairman proposed ‘ The North Island Poultry Association, emphasising the assistance one Society derived from another in belonging to the Association. Ha coupled the toast with the name of Mr A. W. Woolley, who represented Mar ton Poultry Society at the _ recent conference at New Plymouth. Mr Woolley briefly responded. The toast of “The Judges” was proposed by Mr J. Robson, who expressed his' regret that Mr Fitzherbert was unable to bo present to reply. It was one of the most important features to obtain judges in whom exhibitors could place entire confidence. In Messrs Casey and Fitzhcrbort the Society had been fortunate, and all would, he said, ■join in congratulating them on the stand they had taken. They had given great satisfaction, and ho had never seen a show judged where so little had been said about the pudglug afterwards. In several ot tiio cassos, whore there was keen com* petition, the birds were taken from the pons and judged by points, and awards given strictly according to merit. There was no doubt that the judges had contributed largely to the success of the show. Mr Casey, replying, said ho was agreeably surprised with the show. Ho never expected to see such a fine exhibition of birds. There was one thing ho would lil(0 to mention, and that was the excellent manner in which the exhibits had boon staged and the great care taken of the bipis. It was very satisfactory to exhibitors to know this. As regards tho quality of tho birds, taken on tho whole, it was very good, and those of exceptional quality were White Leghorns, Brown Leghorns, Plymouth Rocks, Black Orpingtons, Indian Runner and Pekin ducks, while pigeons foripcd quite a feature ot the show, , “Visiting Exhibitors” was happily proposed by Mr B. Carson. Messrs W. A. Sowmau (Blonhoim) and J. J. Thomauson (Ekotahuna) acknowledged the toast, each paying a graceful tribute to the courtesy received at the bauds of the Society, also Hwarmly conipimeutiug officials on their excellent management and tho careful Jiapdluig of tbo birds. They would conie bac|t £o next snow aud'rocommeud thojr friends to seuq along exhibits. Mr McEldownoy responded to “Success to Martou Poultry Society,” proposed by Mr Sowmau, and in doing =o eulogised the efforts of Messrs Silby, Robson, Carson, and others for tho energy displayed in promoting tho show. efforts had boon rewarded, and it was pleasing to note that tho second gathering hgd eclipsed their initial efforts, both as to' quality of birds and number of entries' received. Tho show also promised to be a financial success. Other toasts honoured were “Donors’ of Special Prises” .and ‘ ‘ Tho Press,' ’

There was a satisfactory attendance at the show last evening, the Martou Baud providing a musical programme. Mr J. J. Thomason, Eketahuna, won tho points prize, and Mr W. A. Sowraau, Blenheim, the North Island Pastoral Association Charm piouship for Barred Plymouth Rocks, Mr W. R. Suellgrovo, Martou, obtained first award for White Plymouth cock.

Mr A. W. Woolley had an attractive exhibit of fowl grit and seed potatoes, showing samples of 20 different varieties. Mr J. Robson supervised the penning of tho birds, winch were ready for judging in good time. Tho judge was very’ pleased with tlio Game, which included Mr N, Oldham’s North Island Champion. He described it as a magnificent sneimen of the breed.
