Wellington Steeplechase Meeting ; First Day. ; Press Association. Wellington, July 20. " The Wellington Racing Club’s ; Winter Meeting opened to-day in fine i weather. The attendance was large, including His Excellency the Governor, Sir Joseph Ward, the Hons.. ; Carroll, Millar and Findlay, and , members of Parliament. The sum of ; £15,308 was passed through the totalisator, being £3856 more than the corresponding day last year. The winning double on the Parliamentary Handicap and Winter Hurdles paid £ll3 11s. Results;— Stewards’ Handicap, six furlongs : St. Bill 1, Gawain 2, Jolly Friar 3. Also started—St. Claimer, Platypus, Chicane, Makikihi, Kaiuku, Pardon and Silver Shell. Won by a length. Time, Imin 19sec. Dividends, £5 12s and £1 7s. Miramar Hack Handicap, seven furlongs: Wakaraka 1, Truthful 2, Tangaroa 8. Also started—Te Arai, Compass, Warlock, Pearlie,' Vale, Nero, Hinupai, Gold Guard, Scenery, Lady Storm, and Papatawa. Won easily. Time, Imin 84 3-sth secs. Dividends, £6 5s and £8 9s. First Hack Hurdles, 1% miles;! Stayboy 1, Waipu 2, Matakokiri 3. Also started—Kaipetipeti, Golden Comb, Top Rose, Southern Cross, Regulation, Idasa, Oasis, St. Albert, Royal Blue, Playmate, Black Squall, Dulcinea and Raimi. Won by half a length. Time, 3min 24 3-sth secs. Dividends, £l9 and £3 Is. St. Albert and Waipu were bracketed on the machine. Parliamentary Handicap, one mile : Ellerton 1, Aeolus .2, Kurawaka 3. Also started—Montigo, Narcotic, Chatterer, Clanchattan, Whakawqhi, Seaman, Intelligence, Mataari, Hatley, Lady Warwick, Shrapnell Shell, Naptha, La Torpedo and Rosegrove. Intelligence and Kurawaka were prominent for half way, where Ellerton took charge, and won comfortably by half a length, Kurawaka three lengths away. Time, Imin 47 8-sth sec. Dividends, £5 16s and £4 I'iS. Winter Hurdles, two miles: Lull 1, Asteroid 2, Cavalry 3. Also started—Prospector, Pushful, Evenlode, Merriwai, Bonheur, Ben Johnson, and Levant. Ben Johnson and Lull led for a mile and a half, where the former dropped back beaten. Asteroid challenged Lull, but the latter held the advantage and won by two lengths. Time, Smin 52 4-sth secs. Dividends, £7 5s and £2 ss. ; Trial Plate, six furlongs : All Red ■ 1, Wallasey 2, King Post 3. Also started—Hillspring, Alluvial, Don ; Carlos, Defeat, Tosami, Speciosa, L Merry Zetland, Nukutihi, Monkey, Grand Circle, Blue Bell, Royal Star, Lucretius, Blue River and Master Leslie. Won by three parts of a length. Time, Imin 20 2-6th secs. Dividends, £2 3s and 17s. Te Aro Hack Scurry, five furlongs: Toa Tuhi 1, Waihuka 2, Aotea 8. Also started —Earley, Strathoona, Naumai, Truthful, Tawhera, Martyrium, Ancycle, Oblivion, William and St. Killian. Won by half a length. Time, Imin 4sec. Dividends, £2 10s and £1 6s.
