REDUCED CABLE RATES

Press Association —Copyright. Melboubne, July 20. In the Senate Mr Pearce asked if it was correct -'that Ministers intended to approach otiier Governments interested in the Pacific Cable with a view to reducing the press rates so that more Commonwealth news could he published in European papers. He favoured Sir W. Lyno’s suggestion to have Oommoms’ealth hews sent by Pacific Cable -by the Commonwealth Parliament, which would then have some control over the news cabled.

The Vice-President replied that the question of reduction of cable rates had not been considered at any Cabinet meeting he had attended, but Government had under consideration from time to time the advisability of supplementing news sent to Britain on Australian affairs.

In the course-of an interview on the question of reduced cable rates via the Pacific .the PostmasterGeneral said ho had very little doubt that cable rates would be reduced both for the press, public and Government message:-. Government is considering the whole matter but nothing has been decided as so many interests are involved since the Pacific messages have to pass over other lines.
