Mr Pv. Glendining, who has interested himself in the proposal of the City Council to provide a winter garden for the citizens of Dunedin, has generously decided to undertake the entire cost of the structure and to present it to the city. The building will bo divided into three parts, namely, tropical, sub-tropical, and cool house.
Mr A. W. Lloyd addressed a meeting at Dunedin last night at which the following resolution was carried unanimously ;—"That this meeting representative of the fruit industry and laundry business of Dunedin emphatically declares itsejf in favour of the principle of a white Now Zealand, and urges legislative action to restrict Asiatic immigration.”
The late Mr Stephen Henson, whose death is recorded to-day, was a very old colonist. Ho arrived in Sydney in 1847 and from thence came to Wanganui and took part fn dealing with the troubles iu the Maori war. Thirty years ago ho took up his residence iu Sand on, but for the last seven years lias resided at Feijding. His wife died 15 years ago. He leaves two sous, Mr John Henseu, of Sandou, and Mr Watsou Heuseu, of Raumai; also a daughter, Mrs F. Matthews, with whom he was residing, at the time of his death.
Sir Joseph Ward says that a great deal of the leasehold protest and freehold Jubilation over the Financial Statement was based on the innocent remark that “the present holders of leases in perpetuity will bo offered the option of the freehold” at a price to bo fixed by arbitration, or, in other words, at the present valuation of the, holding. This was interpreted to cover laud for settlement laud as well as ordinary Grown laud. Speaking to a Lyttelton Times roportro, Sir Joseph Ward said that ho had been misunderstood on the 'point. “The option of the freehold will bo offered to* holders of leases iu perpetuity over ordinary Grown lauds,” ho asid. “It will not bo offered to tenants under the Lands for Settlement Act.' Those tenants will bo allowed to pay off up to 90 per cent of the value as proposed iu last year’s Bill, but they will not bo allowed to secure the freehold at the present valuation or any other valuation. There aro about four thousand Crown tenants, bolding 1,800,000 acres of ordinary Crown lands under lease iu perpetuity, and these tenants are the only ones to ho offered the freehold. ’ ’
