MANGAWEKA.
[From Our Own Correspondent. ] There is a dearth of nows iu this part of the British Empire at present. Generally, Mangaweka has a sort of a nap about this time of the year, but it was rudely awakened by the cries of “lire” a week ago, and at present is not allowed to slumber qn account of the hammering and banging up of temporary premises for those unfortunates who had their business premises destroyed. The flare,up was tho cause of a meeting being called and I am pleased- to say largely attended, to hud out where a-water supply could’ ho obtained, what this would cost, and many other little items concerning jmbHc safety, etc. Tho general, Mr ’S. Mair, Engineer for the : County Council, went properly into figures, and I predict the result to be a’permanent water supply for • fire purposes as well as ’household use, firo brigade and so on~that is if the capital is available. Many thanks are duo to Mr Mair for his calculations and assistance at the’ meeting.
Another item that should riot'be allowed to pass notice is the success achieved by our school chidlron, tpf ether with the headmaster, Mr P.' acksou, at the hTan'ayratu' Show. For' the school section classes the following prizes were secured Oolleotion of dried grasses, Ist prize, 40s i collection of injurious New Zealand weeds, Ist prize, 40s; collection of insects Injurious to vegetation, fid prize, 10s j total £4 10a. Tins, I think,' speaks well for the interest taken- by both school children 'and tlieir’teachers. It is also Interesting and instructive.
