THE SUGAR CONVENTION.

Press Association.—Copyright. London, July 5.

In the House of Lords, Lord Denbigh stated the denunciation by Government of tho penal clauses in the Brussels Sugar Convention had caused the abandonment of a movement to establish a sugar beet factory .at Beaford which would have employed 120 men. Lord Lansdowne said tho sugar producing colonies regarded the action of Government with the most profound dismay. If British markets were re-opened to bounty-fed sugar the keystone of the Convention would be withdrawn. Lord Pitzmaurico declared that the abolition of the Convention system and the free introduction of sugar would provide more employment than any artificial arrangements.
