DEATH UNDER CHLOROFORM.
The Inquest. Per Press Association. Dunedin, July 3. .Tho Coroner held an inquest this afterno6n’:oii the'Wdy of David' Martin, 1 w)io iJigd' under 'chloroform wliilh ‘ being operated upon in a private hospital. * jjr Barnett deposed that deceased was a retired farmer 1 residing fj-t Spreyi[6n (near Christchurch). He was sent "down to witness five weeks’ago for an operation for caqcgr of the upper jaw. This ex T tensiv’g operatic?!, which lasted over two hpurs, was? ’ successful and {die patient pf.ood - anaesthetic (administered by Dr ; Wffiiarns) very well. Sc progressed favourably and another operation was ■ about to be undertaken yesterday to remedy the disfigurement caused by tho ■ first operation. Dr Williams again administered the anaesthetic and precautions ; wore taken. In throe or four minutes the patient scorned sufficiently under to allow witness to inject a solution to prevent hemorrhage. It was then noticed that the jiatient was not sufficiently under tiie infiuonco for tho operation to be com- ; njeuced, and Dr Williams gave more of 1 the ancesthetie. Suddenly the patient’s face hoeamo blanched, the pupils dilated I and the pulso ceased. Prom that moment . ] although for an hour and a half every s possible effort was made to restore him, ( no sign of life returned. Witness concluded that deceased had died suddenly from syncope, tho result of the aiues- 1 thetic. i Dr Williams corroborated the evidence c of Dr Barnett. E
. The jury returned a verdict in accordance with this evidence, adding that every precaution had been taken.
