ALLEGED CHARITY SWINDLE.

The Daily Express reveals a great swindle conducted by Mrs Elizabeth Horne, who represented herself to be a daughter of the late Bishop Oowie, of Auckland. Mrs Catherine Christie, aged 80, and a negro, who formed a syndicate, worked in London and Paris for years developing 83,000 square miles in Madagascar with timber, gold, precious stones and gums. The project was conducted in the name of charity. Every investor was sworn to secrecy. Solicitor’s inquiries revealed the official French Government’s disavowal of the concession. Auckland, July 3, In connection with .the cablegiain of this morning-it, is important to note that Bishop Cowie had only one daughter, who married Mr Marshall, a resident of Upper Waikato, and she is still living there. The woman referred to must have been merely a person posing as /a daughter of the late Bishop Cowie.
