FEILDING COURT.
At Eeildiug Court this morning, before Mr Thomson, S.M., Edward Bayle was charged with playing an unlawful game of chance similar to the totalisator at the Awahnri races on May 32nd. He was fined £5 and 7s costs. Matthew Williams, on the charge of intending to leave the district without providing for the maintenance of his unborn illegitimate child was ordered to find security for the payment of £35, in addition to £5 already paid to the Maternitv Home, Wellington, and 52s costs. Judgment was given for plaintiff in the following undefended cases:—W. Donald v. S. Harley, claim 13s 6d, costs ss; Edward Hessey v. Edward Riley, .claim £35, costs £3 14s; A. E. Walker v. T. U. Marumaru, claim £5 14s 6d, costs.£l 14s; B. Sutherland v. D. Stanbuxv, claim £4 9s lid, costs 10a; W. Murray v. George Smith, claim £3 7s Bd, costs 10s; A. McGorkindale v. W. Jackson, claim £6 7s (id, costs 17s; A. J. Worsfold v. J. Davis, claim £1 8s 7d, costs 10s. Judgment -was given in the Adams v. McElroy case for the defendant with £9 6s fid costs. Before proceeding witii the ordinary, business of the court Mr Thomson, S.M., said he desired to say a few words on behalf of himself and his fellow officers with respect to tiro late Mr Matravers, whose sad death took place on Friday. He was the oldest officer of the Magistrate’s Court 'oh this coast h'avihg been in the service about 00 years and he' had been intimately known to ffigny of them during the past 30 years. ‘Mr Mat-ra-vers has always done' his work honestly and to the best of his ability. He was a kind man and had done many kindnesses in a quiet way to those in need, Mr Prior, on behalf of the. Bar, said he could endorse all that Mr Thomson had said. A reference to Mr Matravers, which was recently made by Colonel 'Roberts, whose orderly Mr Matravers had been while in the Constabulary, showed that the deceased at that time had then the same good qualities as later and, was popular with ail with whom ho was brought into .contact.
