MOUNTED CADETS.

The first parade of the first detachment of mounted cadets formed in Melbourne took place last week. The detachment is only a nucleus, because the active steps leading up to the formation of tiie mounted cadets were only begun a few weeks ago, but in that short while more than half a squadron of juvenile warriors have come forward and take the “shilling,” which, in this case, is a bond to abstain from “smoking, bad language, and intoxicating liquors.” Every boy loves a gun. If he can wear a uniform as well, he is doubly pleased. Put him on a horse, apparelled and armed, and his delight cannot be measured. There were 25 such resplendent and contented youngsters at the first parade. The others had not had time to get to an equal state of perfection, but they were there all the same. The cadets are recruited from boys attending schools and colleges, and boys who have left school, residing in Melbourne and suburbs. The age limits are 13 and 18. years. Members provide their own ponies, saddles, bridles, and uniforms, and, in return, they'will be instructed in riding, the care and treatment of horses, mounted and foot drill, the use of arms, and other important exercises leading to develop a boy physically, mentally and morally. So far the organisers have succeeded in recruiting from the Church of England Grammar School, the Scotch College, Caulfield Grammar School, St. Patrick’s College, and the Malvern and King’s Colleges.
