FEILDING BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The Council met last night, the .Mayor, Mr Trewin, in the chair. The inward correspondence was dealtwith as follows: Prom F. Flavell, asking that approach to Premier stables bo metalled. —Referred to Public Works Committee. From F. if. Cooke, on behalf of Mrs Monckton, stating by action of Council in

cutting away end of Campbell-street, portion of her land had been washed away by Oroua river.—Council has no intention to cut road down. From J. Haliburton, drawing attention to bad state of Fitzroy-street’.—Referred to Public Works Committee. From John Prior, asking that water supply mains be extended into Campbellstreet; if necessary the inhabitants to pay cost of work but not for material.— watornmins to be laid accordingly. From Manager Fcilcling Gasworks, stating that Council’s offer to purchase had been sent to Managing Director, at present in Australia. From J. H. I obinson, assistant clerk, tendering his resignation.—Accepted. From Frank F. Haggitt, on behalf of

contractors of work on Ximbolton road requesting payment of balance due.— To be paid.

From E. A. Barton and I. E. Hicks : asking that ivator-tablo on west side ol Monmouth-streot bo formed.—Referred to Public Works Committee.

In the estimates submitted, the prin- . cipal items of expenditure were—interest on loans and overdraft £423, salaries <£377, public lighting <£3oo, now works X 750- maintenance <£sßl, rent and sinking fund South-street land <2520, making a total with several other items of <£3605 10s Id. The receipts wore <£2500 14s 2d, equal to a rate of twopence in the pound on a valuation of <£311,900 ; Government subsidy of <£235 14s Gd, licenses <£3o4, with other receipts equalling the expenditure. The Council adopted the estimates and resolved to slriko a general rate of two pence in the <£, a library rate of 1-lCth of a penny in the <£, and to collect 4-od on the water loan and'3-5d on the surface drainage loan, and a water rate of 10s on all laud and buildings to which water is supplied, the rateable value of which does not exceed <SI2 10s. REPORTS:

The committee set Tip to report on the re-organisation of tho Borough staff made the following recommendations ; That applications bo invited for position of Borough Inspector at a salary of £lO-1.

That work performed by turncock bo carried out by contract under supervision of Engineer. 'Thatjmonthly report of labour needed bo made to Council.

That £75 per annum bo the salary of assistant clerk.

That, Mr Harding’s salary be <£3 a week, his services to terminate on the appointment of Engineer. Recommendations were made for increasing the salary of the abattoir inspector, purchase of new- furniture, etc.— These were adopted. MISCELLANEOUS. A deputation of residents on Kimbolton road requested that footpath be kerbed and channelled, and the road improved.—Consideration deferred. An opinion was received from Mr Prior that Macarthur-street, from Manchester street to Stafford-street, was a private street, and the property owners are liabte to pay cost of putting it in proper order before the Council can take it over. —Resolved to ask property owners to comply. Cr Goodbehero presented a petition from 80 ratepayers asking the Council to take steps to form a river board.—Held over.In reply to an application from Mr Tolley it was resolved that no relaxation be made of the by-law defining the brick area. The Mayor’s honorarium for current year was fixed at £SO. Eighteen applications for position of engineer were referred to a sub-committee, final selection to be made by Council on 13th inst.

It was resolved that the engineer be requested to prepare a stock sheet showing amount and value of material, etc., the property of the Council.
