Mr Chamberlain in a letter to the organisers of the dinner to Sir Robert Bond, Premier of New Potmdland, said: “I trust tho difficulties iu connection with the fisheries question will be arranged satis--faotorily aud that this will he a prelude to that union with tho great dominion of the west, which I believe will ultimately he found to he most conductive to the permanent welfare of Newfoundland.” Sir Robert Bond remarked that the union of Newfoundland and Canada at present was neither desirable nor within the region of practical Had the precis of the Imperial Conference been more adequate, what occurred there, in relation .to Newfoundland would not have been misrepresented by the Press. He regretted that tho Blue Book withheld the discussions following his statement by describing the discussion as private.
