FLAX INDUSTRY.
Press Association. Thaues, June 5. In connection with tho flax industry, which is assuming largo proportions locally and throughout the colony and is likely to further extend, Mr George Scotchor, long identified with the industry, who has returned from a southern tour, mentions this important matter. He says that the importance of the industry may be guaged from tho fact that flax lauds are being depleted of their roots, which are being shipped to the Now Hebrides and other Islands, whore in time competition with tho industry in New Zealand may confidently he expected. Tiiis is detrimental to the interests of the colony and should he stopped. There are vast areas in New Zealand whore plants could he grown to material advantage and profit. Possibly when the attention of Government is directed to the matter some action will he taken. Consideration should also he given to the best methods, to he adopted to encourage and foster tho flax.
