MISSING GOLD.
Press Association. —Copyright. Melbourne. June 4. Four bars of gold, valued at £I7OO, have mysteriously disappeared from the Mint. Pasise, a Bendigo gold buyer, brought the gold after the main building closed. The constable in charge of the police at the Mint lodged it in the Mint safe, to which there are two keys, the constable holding one and the Master of the Mint the other. The safe was locked when the discovery was made, and there were no signs of tampering with the lock. The constable kept Ids key in his pocket. Between the time of placing the gold in the safe and the discovery the police guards wore changed thrice. Inquiries are progressing. The supposition is that by some means the key was abstracted and replaced in the Constable’s pocket. The constable left the key of the Mint safe in the pocket of his vest when lie wont to bed. The thief must have twice entered the room to get and replace tiie key. Pascoe, on handing over the gold, signed the usual document exonerating the Mint, police authorities, and officers in charge in the event of its being stolen.
