Otaki Racing Club

First Day. The Annual Winter Meeting of Otaki Club was held yesterday in dull weather with intermittent showers towarda the end of the day. There was a record attendance, which was reflected by the totaHsator turnover/whioh was ,£11,799,

against £8822 for corresponding day last year. The fields, taken all through, were above the average, an! the racing of a most interesting character, several of the finishes being exceedingly close. The dual success of the Hon. J. D. Ormond's horse.?, Idealist and Sir Tristram, proved vfery ponular, and to a great oxtent were anticipated by the public. Sir Tristram's condition was superb, and he won the Eaukawa Cup comfortably. The field of sixteen which competed for this event for class would have been quite up to the mark on any metropolitan course. The starting ef Mr T. Cameron was on the whole satisfactory, his worst dispatch being the opening event, when the field was sent away in very straggling order. The goiug was holding and against fast times being recorded. Handicapper J. H. Pollock is to be congratulated on the large fields, excellent racing emanating from his adjustments. Idaeus broke down very badly in the Eangiuru Handicap, and may not race again. Stayboy and The Dauber went off at top and led at the first fence, which proved fatal to Stayboy. The Dauber led past the stand from St Amelia and Bonheur. Going down the back, AValls took St. Amelia to the front, getting a break on the rest of the field. Bonheur : : et out after her on the home bend, but (it Amelia was still a couple of lengths to the good at the last fence, but coming to grief left Bonheur in command. The latter had to stall oft' a very determined challenge from Hurimoana. Bonheur only just lasted'long enough to win by the shortest of heads, Eomany Lad three lengths away. Time, 2min 58 2-ssec. Kuku, King Billy, and Platypus abreast were the leading trio passiug the box. Kuku was in command as they went down the back with Platypus lying next, and Sir Tristram in amongst a bunched lot close handy. Kuku remained in the lead round the home bend, whero Volume and Sir Tristram began to close up. Volume stumbled badly and lost several lengths. Soon after heads were turned for home, Sir Tristram got to Kuku and quickly asserted his supremacy and coming on full of running won with a bit in hand by two lengths, with Volume a similar distance away; then came Montigo, AVaitapu, and Lyrist. Time, 2min 13sec. Divs, £3 10s and £1 lis.
