SHOOTING NOTES.
(By “Spotter.”) The triangular match for Clio Turnbull Cup, which took place at Palmerston last week between £the Feilding, Hxmtorville and Manawatu Mounted Rifles, was well contested, and provided a very enjoyable outing. The Hunterville representatives, former holders of the cup, were defeated by Feilding by the narrow margin of six points. The winners have very much improved in their shooting lately, and their latest success is largely duo to the instruction that they have received from ex-champion Trooper J Williams, who lias taken a very keen interest in the corps ever since lie lias been in Feilding. The Hunterville Mounted Rifles have two promising young shots in Buglers Howie and Fergussou, tho former making top score for the day with 91 and the latter second with 89 over the 200, 800 and 500 yards ranges. The Manchester Rifles have received a challenge from a team representing Cheltenham and Kimholton Rifle Clubs to shoot a match at Feilding on July 15th at the 200, 500, and COO yards ranges'.lam informed that thefO la a probability of the headquarters Of the Ohdtonliarn Rifle Association being shitted to Feilding, and future competitions being conducted on the Frildiug range, this being the most central place. . . Considerable interest is being taken in the Wanganui battalion shcoting that takes place on Monday. Eight teams are engaged. Four frem Wanganui garrison, two from Palmerston, and one each from Manchester and Rangitikei Rifles. This is tho third competition for tho battalion shield. Palmerston Rifles aud the Wanganui Rifles have a win each to their credit. All tlie teams entered this year have been making largo averages, and given anything like flue weather some largo totals should be_ recorded on Monday. The Wanganui Rifles have been shooting particularly well, and I venture'the tip thatjthey will fight out a close.finish with the team representing tho Palmerston North Rifles. The Marton Rifle Chib intend to continue their competitions through the winter mouths, the shorter ranges only receiving their attention, as the had light makes long distance shooting t. impossible on theif range at this time of the year. The direction of the Marton range must account for much of the indifferent shooting" that is done by riflemen. It is a noteworthy fact that Marton representatives always shoot better away from home, when they are not aiming with the setting sun in their faces. This is shown by their averages of 80 and 83 for ten mell at Hnnterville aud Bulls. An interesting day’s shooting is expected atSaud.on on .Monday. The local club intend holding a field day to shoot off a number of trophies that are already in hand. These will be supplemented by cash and ammunition prizes. Every member of the club should make a point of being present, as this will be the last competition for this season. The trophies will be ‘presented at a smoko social in the evening.
