A PERILOUS VOYAGE.

Press Association. Dunedin, May 30. The sailing ship Glenlui, bound from Adelaide to Conception Bay, on the west coast of South Africa with a cargo of ; 24,860 bags of wheat, was sighted from Cape Saunders shortly before 1 p.m. today making for Otago Heads under shortened sail. The vessel was then 10 miles to the south-east of the Cape, and was making slow progress. When the Glenlui Vas some six miles off she signalled for a pilot, and the Plucky at once went out to tor. She was found standing in under a lower fore topsail and lower main topsail and staysails. The Plucsy immediately took her in tow, and a signal was made to the Heads for the services 0 f a second tug, and the Koputai went out and assisted to tow her in. The vessel had 3ft of water in her hold, ghe had fallen in with a violent westerly gale when off the Snares on Monday night. oer bulwarks, stanchions and deck strucjjres were smashed and washed overboard the cabin fittings were smashed to pieces. Heavy seas which swept over the distressed vessel got down the hold through Jhc cabin and 3ft of water speedily accumulated, damaging her carge and stores. Dating the height of the gale the mate was washed overboard and drowned and the ship’s sails were torn to ribbons. The mate’s name was Jones, but his Christian name was not ascertainable. lie shipped on the vessel at Adelaide.

When the gale abated Captain Scott, who was in command, set all hands to the pumps and when the Glenlui reached the Heads water in the hold had by hard and continuous pumping been reduced to 13in. The captain and crow lost nearly jll their clothes, and all the boats except One, which is much damaged, were washed sway.

The vessel left Adelaide on May 12 With cargo of wheat, and it is probable that as much of this has been damaged iy water slio will have to discharge at port Chalmers and will possibly go into dock for repairs.
