What was described as the first ease of the kind in the colony was heard at Timaru Court this morning, when a local hardware merchant was fined os for having sold an air gun to a boy under 16 years of age. Defendant asked the Bench what kind of gnus could be sold to boys under 16. Could he sell pop-guns? For answer the Bench referred the defendant to the Act.
The sudden death of two young women employed in an office in Auckland, attended as they [were by circumstances that pointed to the operation of some swiftly fatal epidemic disease, cannot be viewed without a measure of alarm, says the New Zealand Times, and it goes on to suggest that they may have been caused hy plague.
The Manchester Rifles held a social last evening, when shooting trophies won last year were presented. The successful competitors were Captain Barlfcrop, first class belt; Vol. May how, second class bolt;, Vol. Jacobsen, g Id medal presented by Mr W. J. Willi;:.nr*; and Vol. Stent, silver medal presented by Mr G. Short. The following team was selected to represent Manchester Rifles in the battalion shield match to ho held at Wanganui on June 3rd Captain Barltrop, Liouts. Pleasants and Domigau, Col. -Ser. Aitken, Sergt. Fisher, Vols. Evans, Parker, Mayhow, Belk, and Stewart. At dago Board of Education Rev. P. B. Fraser moved : “ That the attention of the Minister of Education be directed to the regulations of tho Department for conveyance of children by road or water to public schools, and that he, be informed that in tho opinion of the Board tho regulations are unworkable, raid further that the Minister bo asked to consider the propriety in lieu of above regulations of empowering Education Boards to make their own arrangements for conveyance of children or combining smaller schools; provided that every arrangement made be reported in full to the Minister, the latter to impose such restrictions and regulations as seem fit to him after ha has before him the united experience of the boards.” The motion wtis carried.
A Thames telegram states that while the Waiotahi miners wore proceeding home after ceasing work at midnight, they wore bombarded with stones thrown by six men hidden on the tip-hoad of another in ino. There wore several narrow escapes from serious injury. One man was knocked down and his head injured. Another named Lovell was struck in the face and had the lower part of his leg injured, it is believed broken, and he had ■to be carried homo. Tho men were warned that they were committing an offence, and might do serious damage, but they replied with oaths and volleys of stones. There was no provocation given. The only possible explanation is that they were me iibors of an adult tin-can baud, who wore greeting a married couple with stone-throwing, which gradually assumed a mure serious aspect when the miners appeared on the scene.
~ One of the most progressive districts in the Colony is the dairying centre of Eougotea, and recently evidence has been given of its progress in other than merely matoiial directions. It is only lately' that we recorded the opening there of a Lodge of Freemasons, and on Wednesday evening a Lodge of the Druids’ popular Friendly Society was opened, in the presence of a largo number of visitors from Orona, Morgan, and Alakino Lodges. The ceremony of opening this Lodge was «Hy performed by the D.P., -Bro. 3 Fullbrook, of Palmerston, assisted by P.A. Bro. J. Goble of Oroua Lodge. NV> lass than 27 candidates were initiated, and three members joined uging tbe initial number np to 30. Fha initiation was performed by lire, Robinson, J.P.A. of Makino Lodge, assisted by P.A. Bro. J. Goblo. The Lodge will be known to fame as " Triumph Lodge, No. 62,” and its first officers are—J.P. A., Bro. Burns ; A.D., Bro. Yarrall; Y.A., Bro. Tobock ; secretary, Pro. Roe; AI.S., Bro.
