Sir William Lyue has given the mail syndicate notice that if it fails to enter into an additional bond within a mouth the contract will be cancelled. Sir W. Lyue, interviewed, said he considered the Government had aclopod a callous attitude towards preference. He hoped the discussion would make the British people seriously consider the question, but was doubtful of good results from a
■ secretariat worked by the Colonial ’ Office. Until Australian coastal fleet is a reality it would bo bettor for the Admiralty to maintain the existing squadron'in Australian waters. He 1 regretted that the Conference not consider wbat Pacific Islands ought to be included in the jurisdiction of Australian coastal trade. Sir W. Lyue addressed a crowded ' meeting of the London Chamber of Commerce, aud promised a hearty ■ welcome to all "members visiting Australia, in 1909. Ho complained of ■ Mr Asquith’s reassortiou of the fiction that the Premiers demanded preference on raw materials for British manufactures. Sir W. Lyue insisted that Britain’s trade with Australia was not increasing with the samo rapidity as that of foreigners, aud dwelt on the unparalleled prosperity of Australia. He was enthusiastically applauded. Commends New Zealand Meat. Sir William Lyue visited Smithfield and compared the various classes of foreign mutton. He’ noticed that the Now Zealand mutton appeared fresher, and was a better colour than the Antralian, aud he intends to institute inquiries on his return.
