The Superintendent of the Tourist Daroaat has received a telegram from Department's agent at Queenstown giving particulars connected with the uisappearanco of the missing tourist whose case was referred to on Friday last. The Queenstown agent states that on 16th April a man named Frederick E. North, from America, called to see him about walking to To Anau over the Burley track from the Greenstone. He gave him all the information he could and told him it would be impossible for a stranger to make the journey without a guide. He advised him to telephone to guide Burley at Qlenorohy. He called again in the afternoon and said that the guide’s fee of JBI per day was too much and asked if he would let him know if any others were going to make the journey. On 18th of April North went to Elfin by Government steamer. It was not for some time after that that he knew ho had undertaken the journey. He took with' him only one rug and provisions for about five days. He had no gun nor compass, only a map of the district. He left his American address in case he was not again heard of and promised to write to his landlady from the first post office he reached. It uho mentioned in the telegram that the police searched Martin’s Bay for North without, result and they are now searching along Te Anau track. Very little hope is entertained of the missing tourist being discovered alive.
