TARANAKI BY-ELECTION
Opposition Candidate Elected. (Per Press Association.) New Plymouth, May 14. Tho polling for the seat rendered vacant by the death of tho late Mr E. M. Smith resulted as follows : Okey (Opposition) ... 1991 Dookeill (Government) 1627 Malone (Liberal) ... 1010 Informal 23 The names on the roll are 6205. All the candidates addressed the multitude, also Mr Carroll and Mr Massey. The latter was denied a hearing until after Mr Carroll had spoken. Mr Carroll, in his remarks, congratulated the winning candidate, whose success he attributed to superior organisation and an unfortunate split in the Liberal vote. He claimed a large majority which would have won on a stiaight out go at a general election.
Mr Massey accepted the challenge if the issue was made Freehold versus Leasehold.
The figures at last election were—Smith 1953, Okey 1717, Bellringer 838, Tisch 475, Mills 232.
