In reply to Mr Cox, Mr Churchill said that the Premiers made it clear that their policy was to protect their producers from British or foreign competition and that they could not iu any way reciprocate the free unrestricted access accorded them in Britain’s markets. The Imperial Government, on the other hand, were not prepared to place new taxes on foreign imports into the Kingdom for tho purpose of affording further advantage to tho self-governing colonies. (Cheers.) No question had arisen of balancing a change iii the Colonial policy of pro tec; ion against a change iu the Motherland’s freetrado policy.
