The Freedom of Manchester.

The Lord Mayor of fManchester presented Mr Deakiu, Sir W. Lanrier, and Dr. Jameson with the Freedom of the City at the Hotel Cecil, emphasising it as a personal trihnto amd mark of affectionate regard and brotherlv feeling for the colonies, with -whom they wished to foster the common sentiment of Empire. Mr Deakiu acknowledged the honour, and regretted his inability to go to Manchester, where he would have been brought into closer touch with most interesting 'developments of local government, and would also have-become acquainted with a great industrial community. '■ Dr. Jameson said ho would like to see “Manchester, which enjoyed a practical monopoly of the cotton trade in South Africa.
