HUSBAND FOLLOWS WIFE.
Thedeath of M. Bortholot, the | famous French chemist, was most dramatic and affecting. Mine. Bertholot iiad for some time past been seriously ill, and the scientist, who was deeply attached to her, was extremely anxious. In the afternoon lie attended a meeting of the Academy of Sciences, of which ho was secretary. Returning to his wife’s bedside, ho devoted him«clf to cheering her in her ’suffering. At half■past 5 he withdrew with his sons to his study. There, with tears in his eyes and trembling voice, lie said to" them, “My boys, if your mother were to die I could not survive her.” His sous returned to Mine. Borthelot’s room, while the scientist set himself resolutely to work in an effort to forget Ids troubles. A quarter of an hour later Mme. Borthelot’s illness came to a *sudden crisis. Before her husband could bo called she had passed away. The chemist’s eldest sou went to his father’s study and brokenly informed him of Mme. Bertholot’s death. The scientist, who was sitting writing, turned round in his chair as Ids son entered. Hearing the terrible news ho f gasped, ‘ My God, ’ ’ and fell back in his seat with his hands clasped over Ids eyes. A minute later his hands fell limp to Ids sides. His sou, in an agony of terror, called the doctor from the death chamber. But the doctor could only say that M. Berrtholot had died suddenly from heart failure.
