Hawke’s Bay Meeting. First Day. Per Press Association. Napier, May 8. The Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s Autumn Meeting was commenced to-day. The weather was beautifully fine, and the attendance large. The course was rather soft. The fields were large and racing good. The sum of £10,443 was invested on the totalisators, includin ' £1630 on the double machine. All the 15 acceptors started in the Hawke’s Bay Cap. King Billy took the lead from a splendid start and led for a mile. Volume took the lead coming round the bend and a good contest between Sir Tristram and Volume resulted in the latter winning by a bare half length. Chatterer was two lengths away and King Billy fourth, Flamou last. The Grand Steeplechaser- of Paris, to be run on June 9th, is a weight-for-age race of £4O each, with £6OOO added.
The death is reported from England of Maid Marian, dam of Polymelus and the Now Sopth Wales sire Grafton.
The Kemp ton Park Jubilee Handicap will be decided on Saturday. Noctuiform is engaged in this race with Bst 41b.
The Melbourne Cup winner Blue Spec has finished his racing career, and will go to the stud in West Australia.
Mr Percy P. Bigwood, of the Wellington Evening Post, has accepted a position on the staff of The Referee.
Czar Kolohol, the five-year-old brother to Kremlin, put up an attractive performance at Piumpton Park on Saturday by winning tfho Welter Handicap, after having to make up a lot of leeway through getting left. Marcmma, who carried the Hon. G. McLean’s colours with considerable success a few years back, recently mot his death through being kicked by a draught horse. During his turf career he started in 90 races, of which he won 17.
It is announced that up to the present season the King’s horse Persimmon had earned £113,000 in stud fees.
Mr James Coombe will act as starter at the Wanganui Jockey Club’s Winter Meeting. The Wellington Racing Club’s Winter Meeting will extend over throe days this year. The meeting will be commenced on July 20th, and [end on July 37th. The alteration from July 10th is duo to the fact that Government has fixed on July 24th as Arbor Day, and the W. 8.0. desires to have one public holiday as one of its race days.
