Sir John Forrest, replying to Mr Carruthers, claimed that the delay in selecting a Federal site was . outcome of interference by the Now j South Wales Government. No one thought the New South Wales Government might disapprove of the , site selected by the Federal Parlia- ; uiout. It was never suggested or intended that New South Wales should dictate where the site was to be. As to Mr Carruthers’ threat, he did not think people had any desire to look backward. The aim and desire is to be a dominant power in the southern seas, vwhich would never he realised other than hy unity. Having taken a stop forward in the direction of nationhood they, must not step hack.
