Arrived • Constance Craig from Holriangi, Daniel from Kaipara, Mayflower from Greymoutb, Maroro from Auckland. All report delay owing to stormy weather in the Tasman Sea. One of the Maroro’s crew, Petersen, fell from aloft into tbe sea, fracturing his thigh, but was rescued. The barque Northern Chief, which left Newcastle on the 30th for Auckland, put into Sydney to-night in distress. A heavy gale was met off the coast and the seas swept the deck and flooded the cabin. The captain and mate were below and had an exciting experience in getting free of wreckage.
Sydney, May 8. . The cabin of tho Northern Chief was destroyed, the navigating appliances demolished and the rails destroyed owing to large quantity of water coming on board. Water reached tho hold and it was nceessary to resort to pumping for a time. Tho second officer of the Mayflower had a narrow escape during the gale, being washed overboard and rescued. Adelaide, May 8.
At tho Marine Board enquiry into tho accident to ‘ the Port Chalmers the captain stated he did not think the provision made to guard against vessels colliding with wrecks was sufficient. The Board cautioned the master of the Port Chalmers to : be more careful in future. The steamer lias been temporarily repaired! - -
