McDonald, “THE THONEBIES,” (o>p''«' , e Railway Platform), P'LMEEBfON N. CANCER TREATMENT. The official organ of the Hungarian Medical Board publishes a sensational report of a new and, so far, very successful treatment of cancer. Dr. Franz Hauer, a surgeon, is the author of the article, in
which he describes the new treatment discovered by himself. A year ago, writes Dr. Hauer, an article published by some medical paper was brought to his attention, in which it was stated that the subcutaneous injection of gelatine was effectual as a hemostatic remedy.. As there were by that time some persons suffering from cancer under his treatment, and as all the hemostatic remedies he had tried with them proved inefficacious, ho decided to try the gelatine. The first effect was a very high fever, and Dr. Hauer feared serious complications. Shortly after, however, the fever vanished, and the bleeding ceased. Encouraged by this result, Dr. Hauer repeated the injections, and soon realised that his patients felt better. The wounds became cleaner, the pains were less ened or ceased at all, and the weight | of the very weakest patients increased in a surprising way. In one case of cancer the wound healed completely. In seven other cases he attained an almost complete healing with only small and unimportant remainders. In five cases out of forty the injections were of no effect. The experiment is being continued, and, as our medical authorities tell me, it is most likely to turn the disquisitions of the healing of cancer to a quite unexpected departure.
A curious example of the manner in which citzens are sometimes affected by the problem of the rights of individual States is shown in the ca?e of Mr John Armstrong Ohanler, the divorced husband of Princess Trobetskoi, nee Amelia Rives, the novelist. MrChanler is a millionaire, who is related to several prominent American families. His brothers are Mr Winthrop Astor Chanler and Mr Lewis Stuyvesant Chanler, the Lieutenant-Governor of New York. He was confined for several years in an asylum for the insane in New York. Thence he made his escape, and thereupon instituted an action to recover the control of his estate. The Virginia Courts declared him sane, but the New York judicial authorities held him to be still of unsound i mind. Mr. Ohanler, who is temporarily residing in North Carolina, has just filed a petition in the United Supreme Court for » writ prohibiting the States of New York, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey, besides the District of Columbia, from arresting him. He desires to return to New, York in order to conduct his suit to recover his estate, but fears to take a railway journey through the above mentioned States. Mr Ohanler alleges that the late Mr Stanford White conspired to have him placed itf the asylum.
