CHEAP CABLE RATES.

Australian Postmaster's Views. Jt’ress Association —Copyright. Melbourne, May 7. The Postmaster is now making an investigation of cable rates with a view to ascertaining if possible the effect of a reduction. Personally, he would like to adopt Sir Joseph Ward’s suggestion to come down to Is a word. Inquiries, however, convince him that so heavy a decrease is impracticable, but ho sees no reason why a reduction should not be made to 3s or Ss Gd if other partners In the Pacific cable and tho owners of the Canadian laud line and the company will agree. He has lately been considering a proposal for transmitting free press cable news. The idea strikes him as commendable, hut it would be necessary to secure the co-operation of other parties to the service before it could be adopted. Another difficulty would be the loss on terminal charges fom which a substantial revenue is now derived.
