ALLEGED ATTEMPTED ROBBERY.

The Mailman Deals It Out. Per Press Association. Nelson, May 3. Wm. Hewitt, driver of the Waka-puaka-Nolson coach, was going out to Glen on Friday evening at six o’clock and when near Leager’s a tall well-dressed man hailed him and got on the box. Hewitt says be noticed that the man attempted to rob the money bag and when discovered he struck Hewitt ou the face and jumped off the coach. Hewitt, who is a stalwart Irishman, says he stopped tho horses and followed tho man and had a severe fight, and left the man much mauled on tho road. The matter was reported to the police and a man was seen coming into town tho same night. Hewitt, however, proceeded to Wakapuaka, did not report tho matter till next day, but it is supposed the man is still in town.
