WAITUNA.
(Prom Our Own Correspondent. ) The Waituna West Literary and Debating Society opened its second session on Wednesday evening with a a social held in the schoolroom. Despite the very inclement weather there was a good attendance, about 40 being present. Mr E. Shannon, president of the Society, hridlly outlined the advantages to be gained by joining the society that would help in a -great measure to fit its members to fill tho various offices of citizenship which would fall to their lot in life. The programme,, consisting of songs, duets, phonograph selections, readings, and recitations, contributed by local talent, was well received, some new stars making a very favourable impression on their first appearance in Waitnna. At the conclusion of the programme all present were invited to adjourn to the play-room, whore a dainty supper, provided _by the gentlemen, under the supervision of Mr Norman Shannon, was laid out in an artistic manner,' the floral effects being very fine. A lady member proposed a hearty vote of thanks to the gentlemen for the excellent supper provided, assuring them that on future occasions if the gentlemen wished to assume the role of caterers the ladies would be most happy to allow them to do so, as she was sure she expressed the sentiments of every lady present in saying it was not a hardship to have to sit down and bo waited upon. Tho next meeting will be voted to the election of officers and a programme in elocution. Much interest is being taken in the society and a good time is anticipated this winter. A most enjoyable gathering terminated with the singing of the National Anthem.
